For your industry
AEO for locksmiths: your competitor is a phone number.
A legitimate locksmith's main rival is not another locksmith. It is a lead-generation operation with a $29 phone quote, an unmarked van and a drill — and the person locked out at 11 p.m. now asks an assistant how to tell the difference. This page maps that question and the calm, high-margin work behind it, and what a real shop can publish to be the one named. No prices.

Every trade on this site competes with other businesses. A locksmith competes with something else: a lead-generation number that answers the phone with a very low quote, dispatches an unmarked van, drills a lock that could have been picked, and presents a bill many times the quote. The research behind this page found that pattern dominating the buyer's questions — not who is good, but how to tell who is real. The person on the curb at 11 p.m. has read the warnings and asks an assistant. AEO for locksmiths is the work of being the shop the assistant names, and it is won by writing down the things a real shop has and a phone number does not.
The buyer's checklist is your business description
A permanent local address. A marked vehicle and a technician with identification. A state license where the state issues one, with a number the customer can verify. An all-inclusive quote before dispatch, in writing, that includes the service call and labor. A policy of opening locks rather than drilling them. Years in business under one name. Every item on that list is something the frightened buyer checks, something a real shop has, and something a lead-generation operation cannot produce — and most real shops have never written a single one of them where a machine can read it.
The chart · fifteen questions, five rows
Question shapes drawn from in-session research into how people phrase locksmith asks — not captured answers about any business.
Locked out, right nowminutes — and the question is not who, it is which one is real
- “locked out of my apartment at 11pm in Chicago. How do I find a locksmith that is not a scam?”
- “the locksmith quoted $29 on the phone. Is that real or will it be $400 when he gets here?”
- “should a locksmith be able to open my door without drilling it?”
Verificationthe protective ask, made while waiting on the curb
- “are locksmiths licensed in my state, and how do I check one?”
- “what should a legitimate locksmith's van and ID look like?”
- “what does an all-inclusive quote mean, and should I get it in writing before they come?”
The planned jobdays, calm, and where a real shop earns years of business
- “just bought a house — rekey or replace all the locks, and what is the difference?”
- “smart lock or a high-security deadbolt for a front door, and who installs both properly?”
- “my landlord wants keys that cannot be copied. What is that called and who does it?”
Cars and commercialspecific, and where a generalist listing loses
- “lost the only key to a 2019 Honda. Dealer or a locksmith who can program a new one?”
- “who does master key systems for a small office building in Denver?”
- “safe locked and the combination is lost — who opens safes without destroying them?”
Choosing a locksmithlast, and won by whoever answered the first two rows
- “locksmith near me with an actual shop and a local phone number, not a call center”
- “who has been in business here more than ten years under the same name?”
- “which locksmiths in Austin do emergency lockouts and also planned residential work?”
The emergency: a quote policy, not a price
This page states no lockout figures — they vary by metro and by hour — and yours should not state a national average. What the person on the curb is asking for is protection: that the quote given by phone is the price, that it includes everything, what could legitimately change it, and that you will not drill a door that can be opened. Publish that as policy and it is the sentence the assistant quotes to someone deciding which number to call.
Licensing: say what your state does, and what you do where it does not
Not every state licenses locksmiths. Say plainly whether yours does, give your number if it does, and name the authority a customer can check it with. Where there is no license, name the substitutes the buyer already looks for — address, marked van, identification, tenure. Honesty about the gap reads as competence; silence reads as a phone number.
The planned work is where the years are
Rekey or replace after a purchase, smart lock or high-security deadbolt, restricted keys for a landlord, a master key system for an office, a safe with a lost combination, a car with one key left. These are calm, researched questions asked days ahead, and they are where a real shop earns a customer for a decade. One page per job type, explaining the choice and what your shop does, is matchable to each of them; “residential, commercial, automotive” is matchable to none.
The behavior underneath the curb
45%
of US consumers used a generative AI tool for local business recommendations in the past year — up from 6% the year before
Source: BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, 2026 · 1,002 US adult consumers, SurveyMonkey panel
The lockout is an unusual case: the person has a phone, has read the warnings, and is frightened of being scammed — so the question is about verification, and the assistant answers it from whoever explained how to verify.
And 41% of consumers now always read reviews when browsing for a business, up from 29% the year before. In this trade the review that decides is whether the price matched the quote and whether the door survived — and the last row of the chart shows people searching for a shop with an address and a local number, not a call center.
Local Services Ads, precisely
- Local Services Ads sit above the standard search ads and the map pack on service queries, and are billed per lead rather than per click.
- Eligibility runs through a background and licensing check that produces the Google Guaranteed badge — a verification signal the contractor earns once and carries.
- The placement is a Google surface only. A ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity answer to the same question does not read it, which is why a contractor can dominate LSA and be absent from the assistant answer on the same day.
The Google Guaranteed badge is unusually valuable in this trade, because it is one of the few verification signals a buyer can see at the moment of the call. It is also a Google surface only, and the assistant answering the same person in another app cannot see it.
What gets built, and in what order
- The how-to-verify page first, with your own address, license, vehicles and quote policy as the worked example.
- The emergency page, written as policy: quote before dispatch, all-inclusive, what changes it, no unnecessary drilling.
- One page per planned job type, residential, commercial, automotive and safes, each explaining the choice.
- The entity pass. Business name, physical address, local phone, license number and authority, years under one name, organization and local-business schema matching the visible page. Google states no special markup is required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode — schema is for unambiguous parsing and classic rich results.

How you know whether it worked
Scans re-ask the same questions on a schedule, so the record is a before and after rather than an assurance. Approved pages are submitted to Bing within minutes of going live, and Bing standing is the fastest indicator — independent testing found roughly 87% of ChatGPT's citations match Bing's top results (Seer Interactive, 2026), a measured correlation and not a mechanism OpenAI documents. Citations run to a median of about 6.8 days after indexing, with roughly 42% of pages cited within 30 days, in practitioner testing across 2026 (Semrush / practitioner testing, 2026). No date is promised. And 40–60% of the sources AI cites change every month (eMarketer, 2026).
