Costs & pricing

How much does AEO cost in 2026? The honest ladder.

Every real 2026 number in one dated page: what doing it yourself costs in hours, what monitoring tools charge before the add-ons land, what autonomous software covers at $149 a month, and what agency retainers buy — with a named source next to every figure.

AEO pricing in 2026 is a four-rung ladder. Doing it yourself costs nothing in fees and plenty in recurring hours. AI-visibility monitoring tools run $29–399/month at published list prices (checked August 2026). Autonomous software that runs the whole loop — scanning, building, publishing after your approval, proving — starts at $149 a month. And agencies typically charge $2,000–6,000/month retainers (2026 market research). This page walks the ladder rung by rung: what each price actually buys, what the sticker leaves out, and who each rung genuinely fits.

One job, four prices

Every rung sells the same underlying work: find out what AI engines say when buyers ask about your market, build the pages and signals that change the answer, get them indexed, and check whether it worked. (If that loop is new to you, what AEO isexplains it in plain English.) The enormous spread between the cheapest and priciest rung isn't a spread in the amount of work — it's a spread in who performs it and how much human judgment rides along. Read the ladder that way and the prices stop being confusing.

Rung 1 — DIY: free in fees, priced in hours

Nobody sells this rung, so nobody prices it — every guide implies doing it yourself is free. The honest ledger: cash cost near zero, paid instead in a loop of chores that never finishes. Research the questions buyers actually ask. Draft pages shaped to answer them. Write and validate schema. Publish. Submit the pages to Bing. Then re-open ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and the rest and check, engine by engine, whether anything changed. The full manual sequence is laid out in the AEO playbook, and the five-minute starter version is the five-prompt ChatGPT check.

The reason the loop can't be a one-time project:

40–60%

of the sources AI engines cite change every month

Our reading: whatever you build this month gets re-judged next month. DIY is a standing weekly appointment, not a weekend sprint — price your hours accordingly.

When DIY is the right rung:you're early-stage or pre-revenue, the time genuinely exists in your week, and holding a cadence is something you've proven you can do. It is also the correct first step for everyone else — run the manual check once before paying anyone, so you know your baseline.

Rung 2 — monitoring tools: $29–399/month

$29–399/month

published monthly list prices across the AI-visibility monitoring market

Source: Vendor pricing pages, checked August 2026

List prices only. Per-engine add-ons, credit packs, and prompt packs push many real bills past the top of the band — worked examples below and in the full table.

This rung sells measurement. A monitoring tool asks the engines your tracked prompts on a schedule, charts who gets named and cited, and recommends what to do about it — some draft content too, but the building and publishing generally stay on your side of the desk. The band's endpoints are both real, current tiers: Otterly.AI's Lite plan at $29 a month at the floor, and Profound's Growth tier at $399a month at the ceiling — a tier reviewers describe as “the real entry price” because of what the cheaper tier leaves out.

The catch on this rung is that the list price and the working price are different numbers. Engine add-ons, credit systems, and prompt packs — itemized below — are how a $29-a-month sticker becomes a much larger invoice at full coverage. The vendor-by-vendor teardown, every tier and every add-on with sources, lives in AI visibility tool pricing — this page only carries the ladder.

When a monitoring tool is the right rung: you already have hands — an in-house SEO, a writer who ships, an agency doing the building — and the missing piece is honest measurement of whether the work moves AI answers. In that setup a dashboard is exactly the right purchase, and several on this rung are good at it.

Rung 3 — autonomous software: $149 a month

Disclosure: AEO Action publishes this guide and builds the product on this rung — read this section as the maker's description and check it against the free audit before believing any of it.

This rung exists because most of what a retainer bills for is a repeating loop, and repeating loops are what software is for. At $149 a month ($119/month billed annually), Solo scans 50of your buyers' questions daily across three engines you pick from a pool of five that includes Copilot — Claude joins the pool on Solo Pro, labeled as a model-mode read, never counted as live. Each day the orchestrator picks one highest-value move, prepares the full artifact — schema, an FAQ page, a landing page, or a Reddit pack — and queues it. Nothing publishes without your approval.

  • Publishing, and how much of it you still do. This is the line item to price carefully on any rung, so here is ours without rounding. Two platforms take the page straight from us: Webflow, and Squarespace on its Business plan. WordPress runs the other direction — our plugin fetches approved schema every hour and drafts every six, so nothing is ever pushed into your site. On Wix and everything else, you get finished HTML with its schema to paste, and we check afterward that it went live. Read that as: on most stacks, someone at your end spends a minute per page.
  • Indexing, and what the fee does not buy.Once a page is approved it goes to Bing through IndexNow inside a few minutes. Submitting is the part we control; indexing is Bing's decision, and no price tier changes that. Bing earns its place in the loop on a measured basis — roughly 87% of ChatGPT's citations are pages that also rank there (Seer Interactive, 2026) — rather than on a pipeline OpenAI has documented. You are paying for a standing submission and the scan that watches what happens next.
  • Proof, stated exactly. Every approved landing page is registered against its target question and re-checked on each following scan for up to 120 days — a dated receipt from shipped date to cited date — with a weekly plain-English report of what was done and what moved.

What the cadence looks like once pages are in the index:

~6.8 days

median observed time from a page being indexed to its first ChatGPT citation, in 2026 practitioner testing

Source: Semrush / practitioner testing, 2026

An observation across tested pages, never a promise — the same testing found roughly 42% of pages cited within 30 days, and plenty took longer or not at all. Anyone selling a citation date is guessing, and any vendor charging you for a documented ChatGPT indexing pipeline is selling something OpenAI has not published.

What this rung does not buy: nobody pitches journalists, negotiates partnerships, or sits in your brand meetings — and someone at your desk still has to click Approve. Tiers above Solo are Solo Pro at $299/month and Agency at $549/month; the full breakdown is on the pricing page, and every tier starts with a 7-day trial, no card.

Free audit first — 30 live answers, no account, no email, no card. Then a 7-day trial if the baseline says it's worth fixing.

Rung 4 — agencies: $2,000–6,000/month

$2,000–6,000/month

typical boutique AEO agency retainer

The band most published scopes and agency-side pricing guides orbit. Enterprise platform-plus-services engagements run far higher and are quoted by sales teams, not price pages.

The top rung buys people: an audit and baseline in the first weeks, monthly content and schema production, distribution work, a report with a call — and, almost always, one of the rung-2 dashboards licensed under the hood. Two attributed numbers put the invoice in context. The pricing guides written for agencies advise building 50–70% gross margins into AEO retainers (Frizerly and Pierview agency pricing guides, 2026) — normal for a services business, worth knowing when you compare rungs. And at the platform end, setup fees are real: on Profound's sales-quoted enterprise tier, Third parties report real contracts at $2,000–5,000+/mo plus one-time setup fees of $2,500–15,000. The full retainer anatomy — line items, margin math, and the questions to ask before signing — is in what AEO services actually include.

When an agency is the right rung:citations in your category are decided by relationships — journalists, analysts, trade publications — or your messaging needs legal review at volume, or nobody internal will ever own the loop and the budget clears the band comfortably. Those are real cases, and in them a good agency's judgment beats any software, ours included. If you're on the agency side yourself and pricing AEO for clients, the fulfillment math lives in AEO for agencies.

The line items that move every rung's real total

Whatever rung you pick, the sticker is the opening number, not the final one. Four documented patterns to price in before you compare — each quoted from our market dataset, checked August 2026:

  • Per-engine and per-prompt add-ons. Otterly.AI's published schedule: Extra prompts $99 per 100-pack (Standard+). Engine add-ons per month by tier (Lite/Standard/Premium): Google AI Mode $9/$59/$149, Gemini $9/$59/$149, Claude $29/$109/$439.Peec AI's: Each additional engine beyond the included 3 is a monthly add-on priced by tier: +$35 (Starter), +$85 (Pro), +$165 (Advanced) per model.” Coverage of every engine you care about is often a different price than the tier you signed up for.
  • Credit systems that tax a daily cadence. On AthenaHQ, Cadence is credit-constrained rather than fixed: reviewers calculate 50 prompts x 5 engines daily ≈ 7,500 credits/mo against 3,500 included on Lite, so daily multi-engine tracking exceeds the entry allowance. And Rankscale's own guidance: User-configurable from hourly to monthly, but credit-metered: Rankscale's own guidance is to scan daily for the first two weeks, then drop to weekly 'to save credits.'
  • Setup fees at the platform end. On Profound's enterprise tier, Third parties report real contracts at $2,000–5,000+/mo plus one-time setup fees of $2,500–15,000.
  • Trial reality. Profound: No free trial at any tier; demo-gated. AthenaHQ: No free tier and no true free trial — a discounted $95 first month only. Worth checking before you assume you can try before buying.

None of these are scandals — they're pricing models. But a comparison that stops at the sticker compares the wrong numbers, which is exactly why the full tool-pricing table carries an add-ons column next to every list price.

Rung zero: what doing nothing costs

The ladder has a hidden rung below DIY, and it isn't free either. Buyers are already asking the engines, and the answers already contain somebody's name:

77%

of businesses ranking on Google page 1 are invisible in ChatGPT

Source: AI Search Engineers visibility audit, 2026

Sourcing note, since this page is about spending money on the strength of numbers: this one is a vendor study — an SEO firm's audit of its own sample, not independent research. It is directionally consistent with what we see in audits; it is not a constant, and no honest quote should be built on the second digit.

The cost of staying out is not a number anyone can print for you — it's an estimate you build from your own inputs: how often your category's buyers ask AI, how often the answers omit you, and what a customer is worth. The worksheet for that math, plus the signs the channel doesn't matter for your business yet, is in is AEO worth it.

Choosing your rung in four questions

  1. Do you have more hours than budget? Start on rung 1 — run the manual loop and hold the cadence for a month before spending anything.
  2. Do you already have hands that build and ship? Rung 2 — buy measurement, keep the building in-house.
  3. Do you want the loop run for you without hiring for it? Rung 3 — software prepares, you approve, receipts follow.
  4. Are your category's citations decided by relationships and PR? Rung 4 — hire well, and walk in with baseline data.

10 · FAQ

What buyers ask before paying.

How much does AEO cost in 2026?
AEO costs land on a four-rung ladder in 2026. Doing it yourself is free in fees and expensive in recurring hours. AI-visibility monitoring tools run $29–399/month at published list prices (checked August 2026), before per-engine add-ons. Autonomous software that runs the full loop — scan, build, publish after your approval, prove — starts at $149/month. Agencies typically charge $2,000–6,000/month retainers (2026 market research), sometimes with a one-time setup fee on top.
What does doing AEO yourself actually cost?
Nothing in fees — the price is a recurring loop of hours: researching the questions buyers ask, drafting answer-shaped pages, writing schema, publishing, submitting pages to Bing, and re-checking answers across every engine you care about. And the loop repeats, because AI answers churn: 40–60% of the sources AI engines cite change every month (eMarketer, 2026). Budget the hours honestly before calling DIY free.
Is AEO cheaper than SEO?
They are less separate than the question implies. Google's own 2026 guidance says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and the spending comes in the same shapes: your own hours, tool subscriptions, or a retainer. What AEO adds is measurement across more surfaces — several answer engines instead of one results page — which is why monitoring appears as its own line item. Compare rung to rung, not channel to channel.
Why is the price gap between AEO tools and AEO agencies so wide?
Because they sell different layers of the same loop. A monitoring tool ($29–399/month published list prices, checked August 2026) sells measurement — the building is still on you. An agency retainer ($2,000–6,000/month, 2026 market research) sells people: strategy hours, writing hours, account management, and usually a licensed dashboard underneath. Software that prepares and publishes the work itself sits between the two, from $149/month, because it replaces most of the labor but none of the human relationships an enterprise engagement runs on.
What is the cheapest way to start AEO?
Measure before you spend anything. AEO Action's free audit asks ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity ten questions real buyers ask about your market — 30 live answers showing whether the names in them are yours or a competitor's — with no account, no email, and no card. From there the manual playbook is public and costs only hours. Pay for software or people once the loop's cadence outgrows the time you can give it.

Price the ladder against your actual gap, not a hypothetical one.

Rung zero first, and it costs nothing: ten of your buyers' questions put to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, 30 live answers in about three minutes, no account or card. If the baseline says the gap is real, our four tiers and what each one covers are laid out at /#pricing.
